Pentableaux is a work in six short movements for extended woodwind quintet. With the exception of the french horn, all performers are required to double on at least one other instrument within their respective families - this, for the purpose of expanding the timbral possibilities of the ensemble. The basic premise consists of an exploitation of mostly early music sources. Movements 3, 4 and 6 are variations on existing music from the 16th century, while movements 1, 2 and 5 are more vague in their reference, simply capturing the aesthetic suggested by their titles.
