The excerpts forming the text of this work were taken from George Frederick Handel's opera, "Tamerlano" (libretto by Nicolas Francesca Haym). They were originally set as three arias for the protagonist title character. In removing the weight of the full-blown opera, I was able to exploit the resulting magnified contrast of emotions surrounding this character to create a quasi-music theatre piece in three distinct movements.

Faces was commissioned by bass/baritone, Timothy Jones currently on the faculty at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston.
