-------------

Since its inception, the idea behind No Exit has been to serve as an outlet for the commission and performance of contemporary avant-garde concert music. Now in its 11th season and with well over 140 commissions to date, the ensemble has strived to create exciting, meaningful and thought-provoking programs; always with the philosophy of bringing the concert hall to the community (not the other way around) and by presenting programs in a manner which allows for our audience to really connect with the experience.

Zeitgeist's mission is to bring newly created music to life with performances that engage and stimulate. A quartet of musicians animated by a spirit of adventure and collaboration, Zeitgeist presents works of substance with passion and integrity, and strives to forge new links between musicians and music lovers through concerts, commissions, recordings, and dialogue with our audiences.

Midnight Mary was inspired by an urban legend from New England.
Commissioned by and composed for Zeitgeist (Pat O'Keefe, B-fl and Bass Clarinet, Heather Barringer and Patti Cudd, percussion & Nicola Melville, piano)

[from Damnedct.com]

“...in 1872, a woman by the name of Mary Hart died in New Haven {Connecticut] and was thereafter interred in Evergreen Cemetery.

...different stories surround the demise of Ms. Hart. The ...most horrific -- says her family found her apparently dead of a stroke at the stroke of midnight and quickly had her buried; her aunt, however, had a dream the next night in which she saw Mary still alive in her coffin and plead with the powers-that-be to dig her up. After they finally capitulated, dug her up and opened her casket, they discovered a horrific sight: Mary was dead, but apparently hadn't been quite that way when buried -- her fingernails were bloodied and the inside of her coffin was shredded as she had apparently tried to claw her way out.
[Another] story... Mary having been a witch in life and her grave being cursed -- anyone who was there at midnight would meet a terrible end when the witch rose from the dead. Since New Haven is renowned as a college town, there was always a student or two who scoffed at the story and tried to stay the night in the cemetery, only to be found dead the next morning, a victim of the murderous spirit of Midnight Mary.”

Taphephobia - the fear of being buried alive - is said to have been fairly widespread around the late 1800s/early 1900s. An industry of sorts evolved whereby coffins could be purchased equipped with an adequate supply of air piped in from the surface as well as signaling mechanisms - very often, a bell or bells of some sort, with strings tied to the head and limbs below. These became the basis of my programmatic material: wooden knocks, scrapes, music boxes, a triangle for the bells, all built around a static piano line intended to evoke a sense of being trapped, or simultaneously, the image of Mary’s ghost walking the grounds of Evergreen Cemetery, haunting those who dared to visit her grave at midnight.

The first movement, Evergreen references the cemetery where Mary is buried. Her gravemarker – a massive marble slab, no mere headstone – reads:

“At high noon just from, and about to renew her daily work, in her full strength of body and mind Mary E. Hart having fallen prostrate: remained unconscious, until she died at midnight, October 15, 1872 born December 16, 1824.”

Arched above in black letters, the more cryptic: “The people shall be troubled at midnight and pass away”. Followers of the legend(s) take this as proof that Mary was meant to haunt those who disturb her. In reality, the quote is extracted from the Bible: Job, chapter 34, verse 20.

The second and final movement, Arthropodan polymetric dance battle imagines the invevitable invasion of Mary’s coffin by maggots, beetles, blowflies and other insects known to break down or decompose the human body. The movement opens with scurrying lines in the piano and steel drums meant to evoke the image of a moving carpet of all things creepy-crawly. From this, a cajon – continuing the theme of wooden knocks and scrapes established in the first movement – derives a groove over which the bass clarinet slowly develops a solo line. The overall effect is meant to be more light-hearted, exploiting the underlying dark comedy that is at the heart of many of the most famous teen slashers flicks.

Work: Playtime with Elvis & Krispy, Ricochet Duo

The Kelly Adirondack Center at Union College presents Ricochet Duo with its multimedia program The Woodswoman Project: a tribute to Anne LaBastille as part of Union.s 2015 Adirondack Week festivities.

Ricochet Duo.s The Woodswoman Project honors Anne LaBastille.s tireless work as an international environmentalist, author, and icon for women by way of weaving together music, sound, images, and light. The concert repertoire has been selected to celebrate and focus on four tenets of LaBastille.s work: water & woods & birds & silence.

The multimedia program includes stunning photography by acclaimed Adirondack photographers Mark Bowie, Carl Heilman II, and Shaun Heffernan.

Honoring the late Adirondack conservationist, self-proclaimed Woodswoman and friend and neighbor of Rose Chancler, Ricochet Duo.s pianist commissioned Hilary Tann.the John Howard Payne Professor of Music at Union College.to write a work for piano and marimba. The resulting piece, Solstice, draws directly on LaBastille.s writings and is the center piece of The Woodswoman Project.

The Woodswoman Project highlights two other works commissioned specifically for the Anne LaBastille tribute. Pianist Rose Chancler first met Anne LaBastille while walking the family dog, .Elvis.. Anne.s beautiful German Shepherd pup .Krispy-Creme. came running out of her house, with Anne frantically (and ineffectively) blowing a training whistle from behind. Krispy and Elvis struck up a wonderful friendship. Doug Opel.s piece Playtime with Elvis and Krispy captures this romp and delight inherent in being playful pals. Bill Pfaff.s composition entitled Lichen is more reflective of the inspiration found in the color variants of lichen on the ground as well as the song of the White-throated sparrow and composer.s creative response to the unusual world above the tree-line.

Additionally, the program includes On Curious Reflection which was written in 2009 for Ricochet Duo by New York.s Capital Region composer Rain Worthington and funded by a grant from New York Women Composers. Other works on the program are by Mikhail Glinka, Jens Schliecker and Nils Rower, Keiko Abe, Jesús Castillo, Akemi Naito, and Charles Tomlinson Griffes.

Come to the concert and join Rose and Jane for a free post-concert reception with wine, cheese, and hors doeuvres!

The Unbearable Being of Likeness 360 degrees of 60x60 Video (Sanguine Mix). Video collaboration with Patrick Liddell. This 60x60 video collaboration of Robert Voisey with Patrick Liddell is called 360 degrees of 60x60 (Sanguine Mix) and is sponsored in part by the International Computer Music Association (ICMA). The works included in the mix were created specifically for the 2010 ICMC RED Edition (International Computer Music Conference) presented by Stony Brook University in New York City and Stony Brook. Six 60x60 mixes featuring 360 pieces from different composers throughout the world will presented during the conference and at remote concerts around the globe. The 6 different mixes are all named a different shade of red to honor the RED edition of ICMC: 60x60 Burgundy mix, Crimson mix, Magenta mix, Sanguine mix, Scarlet mix, and Vermilion mix. Each mix is one hour long and contains different composers totaling to 360 different works each by different composers from countries around the world. His primary instructors have been Jay Alan Yim (Northwestern University, Evanston IL), Chris Mercer (Northwestern), Peter McIlwain (Monash University, Melbourne, Australia), and Steve Heinemann (Bradley University, Peoria IL). His music has been performed by Function Ensemble (London, UK), Monash Gamelan Ensemble (Melbourne), pLAy Ensemble (Los Angeles, CA), Vox Novus (NYC, NY), Third Coast Percussion Ensemble (Chicago, IL), and many other chamber and popular groups. His art is a combination of music and video (video being the visual counterpart to the temporality of sound), and in a postmodern idiom attempts to combine popular, art, and world musics into a "unified disassociation". His most recent project, Arrow To The Sun, is a multi-dimensional fractal-art piece that fuses music, video, taste, touch, smell, and thought to evoke an anti-narrative of spiritual enlightenment. Their program includes traditional works of Western and Eastern Art music alongside new cross-cultural works by a compelling variety of composers from the Twin Cities and beyond. The four members of Intersection - Gao Hong (pipa), Dave Hagedorn (percussion), Jun Qian (clarinet), and Nicola Melville (piano) are friends, colleagues and collaborators from the faculties of St. Olaf College and Carleton College. They bring a wealth of diverse experiences to this thrilling ensemble: their broad backgrounds in Western Art music, traditional Chinese music, East-meets-West compositions, contemporary music, jazz and ragtime fuse to produce vibrant and varied programming that is fresh and innovative. The program for this concert will include traditional Chinese works, traditional Western works, compositions by Gao Hong, and world premiere performances of new compositions by Northfield composers Justin Merritt (St Olaf) and Alex Freeman (Carleton College), and New York composer Doug Opel.
